You may need additional skills to get the job you want or to move up the career ladder. If you are interested in upgrading your skills, OhioMeansJobs Mahoning, and Columbiana can give you information about schools and training providers and how to get help with financial aid.
Choosing a Training Program and School
Course catalogues and information about schools and training programs are available at the OhioMeansJobs Resource Rooms, and staff are available to assist you. We encourage you to research the various schools and programs. When choosing a training program, you should consider:
- Will you have a marketable credential upon completion? In other words, will you have a certificate or degree that employers recognize?
- Is this occupation in demand?
- Where do other graduates of the program work when they finish school? What is the typical wage graduates of the program earn?
- How long is the program?
- Can you work and go to school at the same time? If not, how will you support yourself during school?
- Will you need child care while you attend school?
- Do you need to brush up on your basic skills (reading, math, English)?
Apprenticeship, the Other 4-Year Degree
For those who want to earn while they learn and acquire qualifications, an apprenticeship program should be considered. Apprenticeships, available in many industries, combine work with structured training and result in nationally recognized skills and experience.
